Select Board weighs renaming Magoon Park's ballfield for the Gibbons family; Pembroke Youth Basketball's Titans hold travel tryouts.
PEMBROKE --
TOWN -- The Select Board on Sept. 23 discussed a proposal to rename the ballfield at Magoon Park, not the park itself, as "Gibbons Field" in honor of Patrick and Linda Gibbons for their contributions to the community. One board member, who said he plays "old man's softball" there, brought the idea forward on behalf of residents who approached him before the election. Board members raised questions about precedent for honorary naming requests and whether the change would confuse residents, and asked for the history of the Magoon name to be researched before any decision. The board voted to table the matter, with the option for supporters to pursue a citizen's petition or gauge public opinion through an online poll or social media.
YOUTH LEAGUES -- Pembroke Youth Basketball's Titans program listed "Travel Tryouts This Week!" on its website for the week of Sept. 27, part of its Winter Travel season for grades 3-8.
